The big game |

Big game fishing- excellent deep-sea fishing- the Canaries has
one of the most consistent fishing zones in the Atlantic Ocean. 'Hot
Spot' is internationally known for blue marlin and tuna, and currently
boasts the world's record for Bigeye tuna and 'picudos' that exceed 40
pounds when fully grown. In the Canaries, what is small is anecdotal.
As in few places in the world, the wake of a great fish attacking carries
a potent charge of adrenaline. Come and take the challenge. Records of the I.G.F.A. (International Game Fish Association),the
E.F.S.A. (European Federation of Sea Anglers) and numerous other clubs
are waiting to be broken, and the Canaries, with its wonderful climate
is the ideal place to attempt it. On our Islands, the idea of 'fishing
for the pleasure of fishing' is expressed through 'catch and release'
- the international term for fishing without killing. Canarian sport
fishermen continue to contribute to what is known about the blue marlin
and many other species by collaborating on international programmes which
mark, tag, study and carry out long term observations. In fact,
the work of these expert marlin fishermen is recognized worldwide. El
currican, or trawling, is their customary practise, although they
also employ other techniques using live or dead bait that should satisfy
the most demanding enthusiast. Modern techniques of big game fishing are based on the traditions of those that have always looked to the sea. One tradition that is common to folklore and indigenous sports: respect for the rival. The sport fishermen of the Canaries display their admiration for the fish by conserving, for future generations of native and visitor alike, not only the fish but all the excitement that make this one of the most passionate of sports. |
